Five Reasons Meditation For Teenagers Is A Good Idea
by Esme Addison
As a parent, it’s not uncommon to encounter moments when our teenagers dismiss certain practices as “weird” or “cringe.” Recently, our family was returning from a long road trip, and my son who had been playing games and listening to music on his phone wanted more screen time. I suggested he read a book, or try spending time alone with his thoughts, or just, you know meditating?
He immediately expressed his skepticism towards meditation, dismissing it as something only “weird” people do. I guess I’m one of those weird people! Because I try to meditate 2-3 times a day. It helps to
ground me in the morning, staves off mental fatigue at midday and then helps me settle for sleep. It’s also a precursor to those time I creative visualize and manifest my goals.
It is a regular practice for me, (I’ve used my Headspace app for 7 years and counting!) and one I want my children to benefit from as well. They’ve all been exposed to mindfulness, yoga and meditation since they were toddlers.
I believe that meditation holds incredible value, even for your average teenager (is there such a thing?) that is not dealing with anything beyond normal teen life. There’s the common misconception, that meditation is only useful if you’re stressed or have anxiety, for example.
But that’s not true.
I want to share the conversation I had with my son and the five reasons I presented to help him understand why meditation is worth considering. That yes, meditation for teenagers is a thing. A very good thing.
Exploring Inner Peace
First and foremost, I explained to my son that meditation is a practice that helps us
find a sense of inner peace. It provides a space for us to quiet our minds, step away from the distractions of everyday life, and connect with our innerselves. In our fast-paced world, where we’re constantly bombarded with information, finding moments of peace and tranquility can be incredibly
beneficial.
Managing Stress and Anxiety
I pointed out to my son that adolescence can be a stressful and challenging time. With academic pressures, social dynamics, and personal expectations, it’s easy for stress and anxiety to build up. Meditation can serve as a valuable tool to manage these emotions, helping to calm the mind, reduce stress levels, and promote a sense of overall well-being.
Enhancing Focus and Concentration
I highlighted how meditation can improve focus and concentration, two skills that are essential for success in various areas of life, including academics, hobbies, and personal goals. By training the mind to stay present and centered, meditation helps to cultivate a focused mindset, allowing teenagers to better absorb information, complete tasks efficiently, and perform at their best.
Developing Emotional Intelligence
Another significant aspect of meditation is its ability to develop emotional intelligence. By becoming more attuned to their emotions and thoughts, teenagers can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and others. Meditation fosters self-awareness, empathy, and compassion, essential qualities for building healthy relationships and navigating the complexities of teenage life.
Nurturing Self-Care
I emphasized the importance of self-care and the role that meditation can play in nurturing it. Taking time for oneself, even just a few minutes each day, allows teenagers to recharge, find balance, and prioritize their mental and emotional well-being. By investing in self-care practices like meditation, they learn the importance of self-nurturing and the value of prioritizing their overall health.
In our conversation about meditation, I explained to my son that it’s normal for new practices to feel
strange or unfamiliar at first. However, it’s essential to keep an open mind and give things a chance before forming judgments. I encouraged him to explore meditation with curiosity and allowed him to find his own path within the practice.
Ultimately, I believe that introducing meditation to our teenagers can equip them with invaluable tools to
navigate life’s challenges, cultivate self-awareness, and embrace a more balanced and fulfilling existence.
