Five Tips To Make Your Home Cozy With Plants
by Esme Addison
Earlier this year, I moved into a new home. I searched for design inspiration on Instagram and discovered the world of cozy plants. So many gorgeous images of rooms filled with plants and accented in botanical colors of green and cream.
I was inspired to create my own version of cozy plants and I will share some of the photographs I’ve shared on my Instagram from my living room. I’m really proud of what I accomplished because all I wanted was to create a cozy, comfortable spaces that esthetically brought me joy and peace. And so I want to talk a little about how you too can add cozy plants to your home.
I don’t have the greenest of thumbs, so I went to my local nurseries, Home Depot and Lowe’s in search of plants that did not require a lot of attention but had lots of beautiful greenery. I ended up with a lot of Pothos which was a good choice for me and my living room with lots of dark corners. I also found some large leafy plants to fill corners.
First you must understand that plants are more than just decorations, they breathe life into a room, purify the air, and add a touch of tranquility. Incorporating plants into your decor can transform a stark space into a warm and inviting retreat. From lush green foliage to delicate flowering plants, each plant brings its own unique charm and benefits.
1. Choosing the Right Plants
Before diving into decorating, consider the conditions of your space. Different plants have varying light and humidity requirements, so it’s essential to choose plants that thrive in your home environment. Here are a few beginner-friendly options that are both beautiful and low-maintenance:
Snake Plant (Sansevieria): Known for its resilience and air-purifying properties, the snake plant thrives in low light and requires minimal watering.

Pothos: Ideal for hanging baskets or trailing down shelves, pothos plants tolerate low light and occasional neglect.

ZZ Plant: With glossy, dark green leaves, ZZ plants are drought-tolerant and can thrive in low light conditions.

Spider Plant: Spider plants are easy to care for and produce small plantlets that dangle from the mother plant, adding a whimsical touch.

2. Creating Plant-Focused Areas
Now that you’ve chosen your plants, it’s time to strategically place them in your room. Here are some tips for creating plant-focused areas:
- Corner Greenery: Transform a bare corner into a cozy nook by placing a tall, leafy plant such as a fiddle leaf fig or a palm. This adds vertical interest and fills empty spaces effectively.
- Shelving Displays: Arrange smaller plants on shelves to create a layered effect. Mix different textures and heights to add visual interest, pairing trailing plants like ivy with compact succulents or flowering plants.
- Hanging Gardens: Utilize ceiling hooks or wall-mounted planters to hang plants at varying heights. This not only saves floor space but also draws the eye upward, making the room feel larger and airier.
3. Choosing Planters and Containers
Planters and containers play a significant role in enhancing your decor. Here are some creative ideas for showcasing your green companions:
- Natural Materials: Opt for planters made from natural materials like ceramic, terracotta, or woven baskets. These materials complement the organic beauty of plants and add warmth to your space.
- Statement Pieces: Choose planters in bold colors or unique shapes to make a statement. A vibrant planter can serve as a focal point in an otherwise neutral room, adding personality and charm.
- Mix and Match: Experiment with a mix of planters in different sizes and styles to create a curated look. Cluster plants of varying heights and textures together for a cohesive display.
4. Maintaining Your Indoor Oasis
Caring for your indoor plants is key to keeping them healthy and thriving. Here are essential care tips:
- Light: Place plants according to their light requirements—direct sunlight for sun-loving plants and indirect light for shade-loving varieties.
- Watering: Avoid overwatering by allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Use pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil.
- Humidity: Increase humidity for tropical plants by misting them regularly or placing them on a pebble tray filled with water.
- Pruning and Cleaning: Remove dead leaves and dust plant leaves regularly to promote growth and prevent pests.
5. Personal Touches and Cozy Accents
Incorporate personal touches to create a cozy atmosphere that reflects your style:
- Textiles: Soften hard surfaces with cozy blankets, plush cushions, and textured rugs that complement your plant decor.
- Natural Elements: Integrate natural elements such as wooden furniture, woven baskets, and stone accents to enhance the earthy feel of your plant-filled room.
- Art and Decor: Showcase botanical prints, nature-inspired artwork, or decorative objects like driftwood and seashells that echo the theme of your indoor garden.
Decorating with plants is not just about adding greenery to your space—it’s about creating a sanctuary that nurtures your well-being and enhances your home’s aesthetic appeal. By choosing the right plants, arranging them thoughtfully, and incorporating personal touches, you can transform any room into a cozy, plant-filled oasis. Embrace the beauty of nature indoors and enjoy the soothing ambiance that plants bring to your living spaces.
