Teaching young children to pray is a wonderful way to help them connect with God and feel secure in their faith. For parents, it’s important to explain prayer in a way that makes sense to kids and helps them understand why it’s meaningful.
At its core, prayer is simply talking to God—just like talking to a parent or friend. Children can learn that prayer is a way to share their thoughts, ask for help, or say thank you to God for all the good in their lives.
So, let’s discuss a few basics. And then I’ll share four tips for teaching children, toddler to ten how to pray.

What Is Prayer?
Prayer is simply talking to God. Just like they might talk to a friend, a parent, or a teacher, prayer is how we can have a conversation with God, whether it’s to say thank you, ask for help, or just to share their feelings. For a 5- to 10-year-old, you can describe it like sending a message directly to God’s heart. It’s not about saying the “right” words—it’s about being open and honest, knowing God listens no matter what.
Why Do We Pray?
Explain to your child that we pray because God loves us and wants to hear from us. We pray to feel closer to Him, to ask for help, and to remember that God is always with us, guiding us through our day. Praying helps us feel connected to God’s love and gives us peace, even when things are tough. It’s a way to share both happy moments (like a fun day at school) and hard moments (like feeling scared or sad).
What To Expect From Prayer
Kids might wonder why some prayers seem to get answered while others don’t. It’s helpful to explain that God listens to every prayer, but sometimes the answer might be different from what they expect. Just like a parent might say “no” or “wait” to something for their child’s good, God knows what’s best for us, even if we don’t always understand. Encourage them to trust that God is always looking out for them, even when the answer isn’t what they hoped for.
You can also explain that prayer isn’t just about asking for things—it’s also about thanking God and remembering all the good things He provides, which helps grow a heart full of gratitude.
How To Teach Your Children To Pray
For young kids, it can be helpful to give them a simple structure to start with, like this:
- Thank God for something specific from their day (a fun time with friends, a yummy dinner).
- Ask for Help with something they’re worried about (doing well in school, feeling nervous).
- Say Sorry for something they know they did wrong (hurting a sibling’s feelings, not listening).
- Pray for Others by asking God to help someone they care about (a friend, a family member).
This basic framework gives children a way to start forming their own prayers while teaching them to focus on gratitude, forgiveness, and kindness.
Making Prayer Part Of Your Routine
Help your child make prayer a regular part of their day. Bedtime is a great time for reflection, but prayers before meals or even short “thank you” prayers during the day can help them develop a natural habit of talking to God.
Teaching children to pray isn’t just about guiding them through words—it’s about helping them understand that prayer is a way to connect with God’s love, patience, and wisdom.
With encouragement and consistent practice, children will learn that prayer is a source of strength and peace in their lives, no matter how old they are.
