Keep Cozy & Carry On: Creating A Cozy Home During Times Of Social & Political Unrest
by Esme Addison
In a world that’s constantly changing and often overwhelming, having a cozy sanctuary at home is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Lately I’ve had an… I don’t want to say obsession – but a hyperfocus on making sure my home is as lovely and cozy as possible. Just last month, I made three trips to local nurseries and hardware stores to purchase plants. I think I have enough… for now. It might be a response to the lack of stability and political unrest in the US and the world. Do you feel it? Or is it just me? Regardless…
Our homes should be our safe havens, where we can unwind, recharge, and feel truly at peace. Just a few years ago when we all had to “stay home”, it became really clear how important a cozy, comfortable home was. And for many, it was the first time they realized the importance of having a cozy, comfortable home.

When I think of cozy and comfortable, that means surrounding myself with books, plants, candles and cozy comfortable touches. I’m unsure of what the future holds politically, but I do know that I want my home to be a place where my family and I feel comfortable and enjoy spending time.
I’m beginning a new series of articles on how to maintain a cozy mindset and a peaceful, calming home during times of political stress, civic unrest and societal and political upheaval. I’ll be discussing ways to mitigate the negative effects of social media and the news, strategies for focusing on what you can control, how to live your values when you finish society’s values are changing and ways to connect with you community.
But first things first, let’s talk ways to transform your living space into a personal retreat, drawing inspiration from historical traditions and backed by scientific insights. And I’ll also share photographs of my home, many of which have previously been posted on my Instagram feed.
Why We’re Obsessed With Cosy Living More Than Ever
The Importance of a Home Sanctuary
Having a cozy mindset and trying to live a cozy life is nothing without a cozy home base. And the concept of home as a sanctuary isn’t new. Throughout history, different cultures have embraced this idea in unique ways. Take the Japanese practice of Ikigai, which emphasizes finding joy and purpose in daily life, including the home environment. Similarly, the Scandinavian concept of Hygge is all about creating cozy, inviting spaces that foster warmth and togetherness. These traditions remind us that a well-designed home can provide solace and happiness, even amidst life’s challenges.

Numerous studies highlight the connection between our living environment and our mental health. A well-organized and aesthetically pleasing home can significantly reduce stress and enhance our overall sense of well-being. Research from environmental psychology shows that tidy, calming spaces help us feel more in control and less anxious, making it easier to cope with external pressures.
Whether you’re staying home because there’s no place you’d rather be, or there’s been a natural disaster and you have to stay home without electricity or water, you want your home to be your foundation. The place you can go to to unwind, recharge and restore. Let’s make your home your happy place.

Designing Your Sanctuary
I am naturally a person who accrues… stuff. So I really have to be mindful of clutter, and how it can effect the home.
Declutter and Organize
A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. The first step in creating a sanctuary is decluttering and organizing. This doesn’t mean achieving perfection, but rather finding a balance that feels right for you. Consider what items bring you joy and let go of those that don’t. A tidy environment can create a sense of calm and make your home feel more inviting.

A cozy living space is meant to be a haven of comfort and relaxation, but clutter can disrupt this sense of serenity. When our homes are filled with unnecessary items, it becomes challenging to maintain a cozy atmosphere. The ancient practice of Feng Shui, along with modern minimalist principles, offers insights into how clutter impacts our living spaces and how we can restore balance and harmony.
The Feng Shui Perspective
In Feng Shui, clutter is considered an obstacle to the free flow of energy, or “Chi,” within a space. This practice emphasizes the importance of creating a harmonious environment by arranging furniture and belongings in a way that promotes positive energy. Clutter can block the flow of Chi, leading to feelings of stagnation and stress.
According to Feng Shui principles, every object in our home holds energy and symbolism. When we hold onto items that no longer serve us or bring us joy, we inadvertently allow negative energy to accumulate. This can result in a living space that feels chaotic and uninviting. To create a cozy and harmonious environment, it’s essential to clear away clutter and make room for positive energy to flow freely.

Practical Steps for Decluttering
- Assess Your Space: Begin by evaluating each room and identifying areas with clutter. Take note of items that are rarely used or no longer bring you joy.
- Sort and Simplify: Sort belongings into categories such as keep, donate, recycle, or discard. Simplifying your space reduces visual noise and enhances the cozy atmosphere.
- Create Functional Zones: Arrange furniture and decor to promote the flow of energy. In Feng Shui, ensure pathways are clear and furniture is positioned to encourage positive Chi.
- Adopt a “Less is More” Mindset: Focus on maintaining a clutter-free environment by regularly reassessing your belongings and letting go of what no longer serves a purpose.
When decorating my new home, I prioritized creating a cozy and tranquil atmosphere. I chose nature-inspired greens, creams, and tans as the foundation, accented with soft pinks and blues. This color palette resonates with me, providing a soothing and beautiful effect. At the time, I don’t think I realized I was using color psychology but after researching for this article. that’s exactly what I was doing.
Color Psychology
Colors have a profound impact on our mood and emotions, influencing how we feel and behave in a space. For those seeking a calming atmosphere, incorporating soft blues and greens can be particularly effective. Studies have shown that these colors can promote relaxation and tranquility, mimicking the soothing effects of nature. Blue is often associated with serenity and peace, while green evokes the calming presence of the natural world, reminding us of lush landscapes and open spaces.

Neutrals like beige and soft gray also play a crucial role in creating a peaceful backdrop for your home. These colors are versatile and understated, allowing other elements of your decor to shine without overwhelming the senses. Beige, with its warm undertones, provides a comforting foundation that pairs well with a variety of other colors and textures. Meanwhile, soft gray offers a modern and sophisticated look that adds depth and elegance to any room.
When using these calming colors, consider incorporating them through paint, textiles, and decor accents. For example, a soft blue accent wall can set a tranquil tone in a bedroom, while green throw pillows or a beige area rug can add warmth and comfort to a living room. By thoughtfully selecting colors that align with the atmosphere you wish to create, you can transform your living space into a serene retreat that nurtures relaxation and well-being.
Lighting
The right lighting can transform a space. Natural light is ideal, as it boosts mood and increases productivity. If natural light is limited, opt for warm, soft lighting to create a cozy ambiance. Consider using lamps, string lights, or candles to add warmth and depth to your rooms.I added fairy lights to the greenery on my mantle. In the evening it provides a nice cozy glow.
Incorporating Comfort and Coziness
Soft Textures and Materials

Introduce soft furnishings like plush blankets, fluffy pillows, and cozy rugs to add warmth and texture to your home. These elements invite relaxation and can make any space feel more inviting and comfortable.
Natural Elements
Bringing nature indoors can have a soothing effect. My home is filled with plants. Every nook and corner has a little greenery.Consider adding houseplants, fresh flowers, or natural materials like wood and stone. Studies show that incorporating elements of nature into your home can reduce stress and improve mood, creating a serene environment.
Adding plants to your home not only enhances coziness but also contributes to a healthier living space. Houseplants act as natural air purifiers, removing toxins and improving indoor air quality. The presence of greenery can uplift your mood and increase feelings of calm and relaxation, making your home feel more welcoming.

Plants like peace lilies, snake plants, and pothos are low-maintenance options that thrive indoors and add a touch of natural beauty. By introducing a variety of plants, you can create a lush, vibrant atmosphere that promotes well-being and tranquility throughout your home.
Five Tips To Make Your Home Cozy With Plants
Scent
I love adding scented candles to my home. Scented candles add an extra layer of coziness by engaging the sense of smell, which is deeply connected to emotion and memory. The right fragrance can instantly transform the mood of a room and evoke feelings of comfort and well-being.
I plan my candle use with the seasons. For example, I like to smell floral floral and beach scents in the summer, and apple, spices and campfires in the fall. But fragrances like lavender, vanilla, and sandalwood are known for their calming properties, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. These scents can create a sanctuary-like atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a hectic day.

As the seasons change, incorporating seasonal scents can enhance the cozy ambiance of your home. In the autumn, fragrances such as cinnamon, clove, and pumpkin spice evoke warmth and nostalgia, reminding us of crisp fall days and family gatherings. During winter, scents like pine, cedar, and peppermint can infuse your home with the spirit of the season, adding a festive touch to holiday celebrations.
Look for organic candles made from human and pet friendly ingredients like coconut and beeswax with natural oils and scents and wood and cotton wicks.

Creating Spaces for Relaxation and Joy
Reading Nooks
Carve out small, comfortable areas dedicated to relaxation and hobbies. Whether it’s a reading nook by the window or a cozy corner with a favorite chair, these spaces can provide a sense of escape and personal joy.

The practice of reading itself adds to this coziness by encouraging mindfulness and focus. As you dive into a book, you naturally slow down and become more present, allowing stress and distractions to fade away. Reading can transport you to different places and times, offering a mental getaway that enriches your life and broadens your perspectives.
Designing a cozy reading nook can further enhance this experience. Incorporate soft lighting, plush cushions, and warm blankets to create an inviting atmosphere. A comfortable chair or a window seat can become your go-to spot for unwinding with a good book. By prioritizing this space and making reading a regular practice, you cultivate a habit that nurtures your mind and spirit, contributing to a home environment that feels peaceful and cozy.

Maintaining Your Sanctuary
Routine Cleaning and Upkeep
Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to keeping your sanctuary feeling fresh and inviting. Establish a routine that suits your lifestyle, focusing on small, manageable tasks that prevent overwhelm. My kids help with chores, and my Roomba keeps our floors dog hair free, but it’s an going task. But one that’s worth it. Because don’t you just feel better when your home is clean?
Seasonal Updates
Refreshing your space with seasonal changes can keep it feeling new and exciting. Consider updating decor, colors, or accessories to reflect the changing seasons, adding variety and interest to your home.
My homes base colors are sage green and cream, perfect for adapting to the fall and holiday. So, I don’t have to completely overhaul my home’s appearance every few months. I just keep what I have and build upon it with tonally similar colors and fun accents.
Creating a sanctuary at home is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about fostering a sense of peace, comfort, and well-being. By incorporating elements that resonate with you personally, you can transform your living space into a true refuge from the world outside. The benefits of such a sanctuary are profound, offering improved mental health, greater resilience against stress, and an enhanced quality of life.
