Six Reasons To Drink Fruit Infused Water This Summer + A Recipe

I went to visit my mother today, opened the refrigerator and saw three Mason jars full of beautiful fruit infused water. I just mentioned in an article on cozy summer reading, how fruit infused water is ideal for hydration when you’re reading outside. And had thought about dedicating an entire article to the cool, refreshing drink that is so popular in the south and around the world.

Seeing the pretty jars of fruit floating in those Mason jars was my sign to write this article.

If you’re anything like me, you like to know the history of things… even fruit water. So, I discovered that fruit infused water, also known as “spa water,” has a long history dating back to ancient civilizations. In ancient Rome, people added herbs and fruits to their water to enhance its flavor and reap medicinal benefits. Similarly, in Ayurvedic traditions, herbs and fruits were combined with water to create healing elixirs.

Over time, the tradition of flavoring water with fruits and herbs has been adopted and adapted by various cultures around the world. In modern times, the popularity of fruit infused water surged as people sought healthier alternatives to sugary drinks and sodas. The trend gained momentum with the rise of health and wellness movements, promoting hydration with added nutritional benefits.

Fruit-Infused Water in the South

In the American South, fruit-infused water has deep roots and cultural significance. The warm climate and abundance of fresh produce made it natural for Southerners to incorporate fruits into their beverages. This practice became especially popular in the early 20th century, when people sought refreshing ways to stay cool during hot summers.

Southern hospitality often includes serving guests a refreshing drink, and fruit-infused water became a staple at gatherings and social events. Lemonade, sweet tea, and fruit punches were commonly infused with seasonal fruits like peaches, strawberries, and watermelon, adding a burst of flavor and a touch of elegance.

The tradition of fruit-infused water continues in the South, where it is still a favorite at picnics, family reunions, and barbecues. The emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and the desire for delicious, hydrating drinks keep this practice alive and well.

How To Make Sweet Iced Tea

My favorite fruit infused water is simple, just cucumbers in water. Second favorite is peppermint (herb or the essential oil) in water but that’s not a fruit, so…). Anyway, lets talk about the benefits of fruit-infused water because obviously both water and fruit are healthy. So, together, they must be awesome, right?

Benefits of Fruit-Infused Waters

  1. Enhanced Hydration: Drinking water is essential for maintaining good health, and infusing it with fruits makes it more enjoyable, encouraging people to drink more. Staying properly hydrated supports digestion, energy levels, and overall bodily functions.
  2. Nutrient Boost: Fruits and herbs used in infused waters add essential vitamins and minerals to your drink. For example, citrus fruits provide vitamin C, while berries offer antioxidants. These nutrients can boost your immune system and overall health.

My mother had a pitcher of sweet tea, and three different types of fruit-infused water. My favorite was the watermelon-cucumber, so I’ll share that recipe with you now.

Simple Recipe: Watermelon Cucumber Water

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 small watermelon, cubed
  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • Water
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Start by washing all the fruits thoroughly. Cut the watermelon into small cubes, slice the cucumber and lemon.
  2. Combine the Ingredients: In a large pitcher, add the watermelon cubes and cucumber slices.
  3. Add Water: Fill the pitcher with cold water. For an extra refreshing touch, add ice cubes. Stir the mixture gently to combine all the ingredients.
  4. Infuse and Chill: Let the water sit in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, allowing the flavors to meld together. For a more intense flavor, let it infuse overnight.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Pour the infused water into glasses, making sure to include some of the fruit in each serving. Enjoy this refreshing and hydrating drink throughout the day.

Fruit-infused waters are a delightful and healthy way to stay hydrated. With endless combinations of fruits, herbs, and spices, you can customize your infusions to suit your taste and nutritional needs.
