Why You Should Teach Your Kids To Think For Themselves

by Esme Addison

When I first started guiding my 16-year-old through the complexities of life, I initially focused on teaching him what to think. I figured that sharing my own values and beliefs, and giving him the “right” answers would help him navigate the world more easily.

I have pretty strong opinions and beliefs, and often times they are contrary to the messaging in the media that my son is exposed to. He’s just as stubborn as I am, and trying to convince him to believe as I belief, think as I think was not a successful strategy.

As time went on, I realized that his independent and curious personality responded much better to a different approach—teaching him how to think. This shift made a world of difference in our conversations and in his growth. Every child is unique, and while some might thrive with clear instructions, others, like my son, benefit more from learning how to question, analyze, and form their own opinions.

Why You Should Teach Citizenship To Your Kids

It’s not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about equipping our kids with the tools they need to navigate an ever-changing world with confidence and wisdom. And that’s why I believe it’s so important for parents to focus on teaching their children how to think rather than what to think.

Seven Reasons Why You Should Teach Your Kids To Think For Themselves

1. Fosters Critical Thinking Skills

  • Analytical Thinking: When children learn how to think, they develop the ability to analyze information, evaluate different perspectives, and make informed decisions. This skill is essential for navigating complex issues and challenges in life.
  • Problem-Solving: Teaching children to think critically equips them with problem-solving skills, enabling them to approach situations logically and find solutions independently.

2. Encourages Independent Thought

  • Autonomy: Encouraging kids to think for themselves fosters independence, allowing them to form their own opinions and beliefs rather than simply accepting what they are told.
  • Self-Confidence: When children are empowered to think critically, they gain confidence in their ability to understand and navigate the world around them.

3. Prepares for a Changing World

  • Adaptability: The world is constantly changing, and new information and challenges arise regularly. Teaching kids how to think prepares them to adapt to new situations, learn continuously, and stay open-minded.
  • Informed Decision-Making: As they grow, children will encounter numerous decisions, from choosing a career to participating in civic life. Knowing how to think enables them to make informed, thoughtful choices.

4. Protects Against Manipulation

  • Discernment: In a world filled with misinformation and propaganda, teaching kids how to think helps them discern truth from falsehood, making them less susceptible to manipulation.
  • Resilience Against Peer Pressure: Children who are taught how to think are better equipped to resist peer pressure and stand by their values, even when faced with opposing views.

5. Encourages Lifelong Learning

  • Curiosity: When children learn how to think, they develop a natural curiosity and a love for learning. They become more likely to seek out knowledge and continue learning throughout their lives.
  • Growth Mindset: By focusing on the process of thinking, kids learn that intelligence and understanding can grow with effort, fostering a growth mindset that encourages persistence and resilience.

6. Promotes Open-Mindedness

  • Acceptance of Diversity: Teaching kids how to think encourages them to consider multiple perspectives and appreciate diversity. This openness leads to a more tolerant and empathetic worldview.
  • Constructive Dialogue: When children learn to think critically, they are better able to engage in meaningful discussions, listen to others, and express their ideas respectfully.

7. Empowers Them for the Future

  • Leadership Qualities: Critical thinkers are often strong leaders because they can assess situations, make decisions, and inspire others. Teaching your kids how to think sets them up to be future leaders in their communities and professions.
  • Civic Responsibility: In a democratic society, informed citizens are crucial. Teaching children how to think prepares them to participate actively and responsibly in civic life.

Ten Ways You Can Teach Your Children to Think For Themselves

I’m not saying that teaching your children how to think won’t always end in healthy debate and sometimes arguments, but teaching your kids how to think gives them the tools they need to navigate life confidently and independently, fostering a more thoughtful, informed, and resilient generation.
